When Traveling to Asylum at Camp Bay:
Many of the guests of Asylum will be traveling from the West End and West Bay areas, as Asylum caters to many of the local residents and workers of these areas. Others will be traveling from the airport. For the residents of West Bay and West End, Asylum will do group pick-ups from the Sun Downer bar at West End via their mini-van, and provide free round-trips to those who are camping out at Asylum Camp Bay. Be sure to e-mail Jimmy in advance (or call him at 504-3320-6004 - Note: Because of increased cell phone use, Jim's number has recently had an extra "3" added) to coordinate a pick-up for you and your group.  Asylum will also arrange for groups to be picked up from the airport, so be sure to e-mail him about this as well.

Travelers who are familiar with the road systems on Roatan know that the best way to get to camp bay is with a good vehicle. For those who are not familiar with the roads, the main road that leads to camp bay becomes a dirt road about halfway up the Island, and has many potholes. If you are renting a vehicle for the week, we suggest a 4x4 jeep (get a convertible to really enjoy the ride!). You can rent them from the airport or from Roatan Rentals at the West End (we LOVED the black one they had there, it was the automatic with the rag top! Great Jeep Wrangler!).  You may want some more adventure by trying out a cool dirt bike trip to Camp Bay! If so, check out Captain Van's at West End and at West Bay! They rent some great rides!

Although Camp Bay is only about 27 miles from the West End (and only about 20 miles from the airport), the car ride up can range from 1 to 2 hours depending on the weather and road conditions (on a very good day, in the wrangler, you can do it in about an hour - as it has an awesome suspension system, so you don't have to worry about the pot-holes). No worries though, you are on Island time, and you'll get there. You will discover multiple places to stop and grab a cold beer, food, water, or any other supplies you might need. French Harbor - or rather the intersection at the main road to French Harbor -has a few nice little shops and restaurants, internet cafe, etc. A great place to stop on the way to grab anything you might need. Re-fuel where you can either in French Harbor or before hand (los Fuentes is a good spot, before then in West End).

Things to bring when camping at Camp Bay:
- Tents, of course.
- Air mattresses if you have them, though the sand is pretty nice there! And, or course, any other sleeping gear you like to have.
- DEET. You need this on Roatan. (The strongest you can find)
- Mosquito nets are great too!
- A few gallons of fresh water and a cooler full of Ice (Asylum has coolers if you don't have one. Just bring the ice in a box or in bags, etc).
- Bring some food, of course. Although, Asylum does have fishing gear that you can use, and you can cook up the catch at La Sirena on the beach as well! (or have the cooks of Asylum make it up for you!). - Asylum is a fully stocked bar, so no worries on the beer, rum, and other drinks!
- Battery powered radio or other devices you may want to have.

That's about all you'll need when you are there!

Enjoy!

PS: The Roatan airport has a nice small duty free shop that you can buy stuff at when you land. You can get the essentials there: Smokes, Rum, and other libations that you might need for your stay.
